Cyberpunk 2077 is a story-driven open-world action RPG developed by CD PROJEKT RED. Set in the futuristic megacity of Night City, the game follows V, a customizable mercenary trying to survive after a dangerous biochip becomes embedded in their head. The game mixes first-person shooting, hacking, stealth, cyberware upgrades, branching quests, and dark sci-fi storytelling into a large open-world RPG about identity, ambition, survival, and the cost of becoming a legend. CD PROJEKT RED officially describes it as an open-world, action-adventure RPG set in Night City.

Night City & Story

Night City is the heart of Cyberpunk 2077. It is a violent, neon-lit city controlled by corporations, gangs, fixers, mercenaries, celebrities, and underground tech culture. Players move through districts like Watson, Westbrook, Pacifica, Heywood, Santo Domingo, and City Center while taking jobs, meeting allies, and making choices that shape V’s relationships and future. The story is especially centered on V’s fight for survival and their connection to Johnny Silverhand, a rebellious rockerboy whose digital personality becomes tied to V’s mind.

Gameplay & Builds

Cyberpunk 2077 gives players a lot of freedom in how they build V. You can focus on guns, blades, stealth, hacking, cyberware, tech weapons, throwing knives, blunt weapons, or hybrid playstyles. Combat can feel completely different depending on your build: a netrunner can disable enemies through quickhacks, a solo can overpower enemies with heavy weapons and cyberware, and a stealth build can avoid direct combat almost entirely. The game’s later Update 2.0 made major changes to perks, cyberware, vehicle combat, and the police system, making modern Cyberpunk 2077 feel very different from its launch version.

Choices, Lifepaths & Roleplaying

At the start of the game, players choose one of three lifepaths: Nomad, Streetkid, or Corpo. Each gives V a different background and opening mission, while also unlocking special dialogue options throughout the game. Cyberpunk 2077 is not a fully blank-slate RPG, but it does give players meaningful room to define V’s personality, relationships, combat style, and final path through Night City.

Phantom Liberty Expansion

Phantom Liberty is Cyberpunk 2077’s major expansion. It adds a spy-thriller storyline set in Dogtown, a dangerous district of Night City, and introduces new characters, missions, gigs, weapons, vehicles, and the Relic skill tree. CD PROJEKT RED describes the expansion as a high-stakes espionage story where V becomes involved in saving the NUSA President and navigating political betrayal. It released for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 26, 2023.

Updates & Ultimate Edition

Cyberpunk 2077 has changed a lot since its original 2020 launch. Major updates improved performance, rebuilt systems, added new features, and eventually led to Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, which includes the base game and Phantom Liberty. The Ultimate Edition later came to Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, and CD PROJEKT also brought the game to Apple Silicon Macs in July 2025.
