God of War Ragnarök
God of War Ragnarök is a cinematic action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. A sequel to God of War from 2018, the game follows Kratos and Atreus as they travel through the Nine Realms while the end of the Norse world approaches. It combines brutal third-person combat, mythological storytelling, exploration, puzzles, and emotional character drama into one of PlayStation’s biggest modern exclusives. The game first released for PS4 and PS5 on November 9, 2022, with a PC version released on September 19, 2024.
Story & Setting
The story takes place during Fimbulwinter, the long winter leading into Ragnarök. Kratos wants to protect his son and avoid repeating the violence of his past, while Atreus searches for answers about his identity, prophecy, and the role he may play in the coming war. Their journey brings them into conflict with powerful Norse figures, including Odin and Thor, while also exploring themes of fate, family, grief, and whether people can change who they are.
Combat & Exploration
God of War Ragnarök builds on the 2018 game’s third-person combat with the return of the Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos, and Guardian Shield, alongside new abilities, enemy types, and companion mechanics. Combat is heavy and cinematic, mixing melee combos, elemental attacks, parries, dodges, finishers, and RPG-style upgrades. Exploration sends players across the Nine Realms, with side quests, puzzles, hidden bosses, collectibles, and optional areas that expand the world and its characters.
Characters & Themes
The game is heavily centered on the relationship between Kratos and Atreus. Kratos struggles with his violent past and his role as a father, while Atreus tries to understand who he is and what kind of future he wants. Supporting characters like Mimir, Freya, Brok, Sindri, and Týr give the story more emotional weight, humor, and mythological depth.
Valhalla DLC
God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla is a free add-on that serves as an epilogue to the main story. It follows Kratos after the events of Ragnarök as he enters Valhalla with Mimir and faces trials connected to his past. The mode blends the game’s combat with roguelite-inspired progression, making it both a story expansion and a replayable combat challenge.
