Genshin Impact is a free-to-play open-world action RPG developed by miHoYo and published globally under HoYoverse / Cognosphere. Set in the fantasy world of Teyvat, the game follows the Traveler, an otherworldly protagonist searching for their lost twin while becoming involved in the politics, gods, and conflicts of Teyvat’s major nations. The game mixes exploration, story quests, elemental combat, character collection, and live-service updates into one of the most recognizable modern gacha RPGs. HoYoverse describes it as an open-world adventure RPG where players explore Teyvat, meet characters, fight enemies, and search for their lost sibling.

World & Exploration

Genshin Impact’s world is built around Teyvat, a large fantasy continent divided into major regions, each inspired by different real-world cultures and tied to one of the game’s elements. Players explore cities, ruins, mountains, deserts, forests, islands, and underground areas while collecting resources, solving puzzles, unlocking teleport points, and discovering side stories. Exploration is a major part of the game’s appeal, with climbing, gliding, swimming, puzzle-solving, and environmental secrets encouraging players to wander off the main path.

Combat & Elements

Combat is based around teams of up to four characters, with players swapping between them in real time. Each character has a weapon type, elemental power, skill, and ultimate ability. The game’s main combat depth comes from Elemental Reactions, where combining elements like Pyro, Hydro, Electro, Cryo, Dendro, Anemo, and Geo creates extra effects. Xbox’s official Genshin page highlights mastering the seven elements as a key part of defeating enemies, solving puzzles, and exploring the world.

Characters & Team Building

The character roster is one of Genshin Impact’s biggest draws. Players collect playable characters with different personalities, regions, abilities, weapons, and elemental roles, then build teams around reactions, buffs, healing, shielding, and damage. The game supports both story-driven character quests and long-term build progression through weapons, artifacts, talents, constellations, and team synergy.

Gacha System

Genshin Impact uses a gacha system called Wishes, where players spend premium currency to obtain characters and weapons from rotating banners. Limited-time character banners are a major part of the game’s update cycle, and collecting new characters is closely tied to the game’s progression, events, and community excitement. The ESRB listing notes that Genshin Impact includes in-game purchases with random items, which is important to mention for this game because monetization is a core part of the experience.

Live Service & Co-op

Genshin Impact is updated regularly with new regions, quests, characters, events, bosses, weapons, and story chapters. Although the game is mainly designed as a single-player RPG, it also includes online co-op for certain activities, letting players explore and fight together. Xbox’s official announcement notes that Genshin supports cross-play and cross-progression across Xbox, PlayStation, PC, Android, iOS, and Epic Games Store versions.
