Elden Ring is an open-world action RPG developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Set in the dark fantasy world of the Lands Between, the game follows the Tarnished, an exiled warrior guided by grace to restore the shattered Elden Ring and become Elden Lord. It expands FromSoftware’s Soulslike formula into a massive open world filled with castles, swamps, underground cities, hidden dungeons, optional bosses, cryptic lore, and brutal combat. Bandai Namco describes the world as being created by Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R. R. Martin.

World & Exploration

The Lands Between is one of Elden Ring’s biggest strengths. Instead of a linear path, players can freely explore huge regions, discover side dungeons, find secret areas, and challenge major bosses in different orders. The world is designed to reward curiosity, with hidden weapons, NPC quests, lore fragments, optional caves, legacy dungeons, and powerful enemies scattered across the map.

Combat & Difficulty

Elden Ring keeps FromSoftware’s challenging combat style, built around timing, stamina, dodging, blocking, parrying, and learning enemy patterns. Players can fight with swords, spears, bows, shields, magic, incantations, and special weapon skills called Ashes of War. The game is difficult, but it also gives players many ways to approach challenges, including stealth, summons, co-op help, ranged builds, magic builds, and open-world exploration to get stronger before returning to a tough boss.

Builds & Progression

Character building is a major part of Elden Ring. Players choose a starting class, level up stats, upgrade weapons, equip armor and talismans, and create builds around strength, dexterity, intelligence, faith, arcane, or hybrid playstyles. Because weapons, spells, Ashes of War, and summons can completely change how the game feels, Elden Ring gives players a lot of freedom to experiment.

Multiplayer

Elden Ring is mainly a single-player RPG, but it includes online multiplayer features. Players can leave messages, see ghostly traces of other players, summon allies for co-op, or be invaded by hostile players. FromSoftware lists Elden Ring as an Action RPG with 1–4 players.

Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion

Shadow of the Erdtree is Elden Ring’s major expansion. It takes players to the Land of Shadow, a new area connected to Miquella, Marika, and hidden parts of the game’s lore. The DLC adds new bosses, weapons, armor, magic, enemies, dungeons, and storylines, and Bandai Namco calls it FromSoftware’s largest expansion to date.
