Ciri as the New Protagonist

The biggest confirmed change is that Ciri is the main playable protagonist. The reveal trailer shows her taking on a witcher contract in a remote village where a monster demands ritual sacrifice. CD PROJEKT RED has said the game will explore what it means for Ciri to truly become a witcher and follow her own path. This makes her role much larger than in The Witcher 3, where she was important to the story but not the main playable character for most of the game.

Story & Tone

The reveal trailer suggests a darker, grounded tone focused on monster hunting, village superstition, moral conflict, and the idea that “monsters” are not always just creatures. Ciri tries to save a young woman from sacrifice while also hunting the beast threatening the village, which fits the series’ usual style of messy choices and morally complicated outcomes. The game is expected to keep the dark fantasy identity of The Witcher while giving it a fresh direction through Ciri’s perspective.

World & Setting

The Witcher IV will return to the broader world of The Continent, but CD PROJEKT RED has already shown at least one new major region: Kovir. A 2025 Unreal Engine 5 tech demo followed Ciri and her horse Kelpie through mountains, forests, and the port town of Valdrest. CD PROJEKT RED said Kovir will make its first appearance in the video game series through The Witcher IV.

Gameplay Direction

CD PROJEKT RED has not shown full gameplay yet, so exact combat systems, quest structure, and RPG mechanics are still not fully confirmed. What we do know is that it will be a single-player open-world RPG. The reveal trailer shows Ciri using witcher-style tools, a chain, magic, and monster-hunting tactics, suggesting the game will keep the series’ focus on contracts, combat preparation, and supernatural threats while adapting those ideas around Ciri’s unique abilities.

Technology

The Witcher IV is being built on customized Unreal Engine 5 technology instead of CD PROJEKT RED’s older REDengine. The 2025 tech demo was created with Epic Games and focused on open-world technology, including dense forests, crowd systems, improved animation, faster environment streaming, and large-scale world rendering. CD PROJEKT RED said the demo was an early look at technology powering the game, not final gameplay.

Release Status

The Witcher IV does not have a confirmed release date yet. CD PROJEKT said it will not release in 2026, which means 2027 is the earliest possible launch window, but even that is not guaranteed. Platforms have also not been formally locked in, though CD PROJEKT’s tech demo discussion references development support for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
