How to Play Genji in Overwatch 2

Learn Genji’s Role

Genji is a fast damage hero who works best when attacking weak or isolated enemies. He is not meant to stand at the front of the team and trade damage like a tank.

Your job is to look for low-health targets, pressure supports, finish kills, and escape before the enemy team can punish you. Genji is strongest when he plays around timing, movement, and clean target selection.

Use Shuriken Properly

Genji has two ways to throw Shuriken. His primary fire is better for poking at mid-range, while his secondary fire is better up close.

Use primary fire when you are poking from safety or building ultimate charge. Use secondary fire when you dash into an enemy, fight in close range, or try to finish a low-health target.

Try to aim for headshots when you are close. Genji can deal a lot of burst damage if you land Shuriken, melee, and Swift Strike together.

Save Swift Strike for Finishes

Swift Strike is one of Genji’s most important abilities. It lets you dash through enemies, deal damage, and reposition quickly.

Do not waste Dash just to enter a fight unless you know you can get a kill or escape safely. Because Swift Strike resets after eliminations, it is best used to finish weak enemies. If you get the elimination, you can dash again to escape or continue fighting.

A good Genji player knows when to dash in and when to wait.

Use Deflect to Survive

Deflect can block dangerous damage and punish enemies who shoot into it. It is useful against many projectiles and strong burst attacks, but it should not be wasted too early.

Use Deflect when enemies are focusing you, when you are escaping, or when you expect a big shot to come in. It can also help you safely close the distance before attacking.

Do not rely on Deflect to save every bad fight. Once it is used, you are much easier to punish.

Master Movement

Genji’s double jump and wall climb make him hard to hit. Use them to take off-angles, reach high ground, escape danger, and confuse enemies during close fights.

Try not to move in a straight line. Jump, climb, drop, and change direction often so enemies have a harder time tracking you.

Good movement is one of the biggest differences between an average Genji and a strong Genji.

Pick the Right Targets

Genji is best against enemies who are low, alone, or distracted. Supports and squishy damage heroes are usually better targets than tanks.

Avoid diving into the full enemy team by yourself. Even if you deal damage, you will often get stunned, focused, or forced out before getting value.

Look for enemies who have already used their escape abilities. A support with no movement or defensive cooldown is much easier to finish.

Use Dragonblade at the Right Time

Dragonblade can win fights, but only if you use it with good timing. Do not use it when the enemy team has every cooldown ready to stop you.

Before using Dragonblade, check for abilities that can shut you down, such as stuns, sleeps, immortality effects, strong healing, or defensive ultimates. It is often better to wait until those abilities are used first.

Dragonblade is strongest when your team is ready to push with you. If you blade alone into five enemies, you will usually get focused quickly.

Common Genji Mistakes

A common mistake is dashing into fights too early. If you use Swift Strike and do not get a kill, you may have no way out.

Another mistake is attacking tanks too much. Genji gets more value by pressuring supports and finishing weak enemies.

Many players also use Dragonblade without a plan. Before you ult, know your first target, your escape route, and what enemy cooldowns can stop you.
