Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Review

A Painted Nightmare

In a world inspired by Belle Époque France, a towering figure called the Paintress wakes each year to paint a number, and everyone of that age simply turns to petals and vanishes. Expedition 33 sets out on a doomed mission to end the cycle before it claims everyone they love.

Reactive Turn-Based Combat

The combat is the star: a turn-based system threaded with real-time dodges, parries, and timed inputs, plus free-aim ranged attacks. Defence is as active as offence, and the deep Pictos and Lumina build system lets you shape each character into something distinct.

A Cast to Remember

Gustave, Maelle, Lune, and Sciel anchor a story that grows richer as oddball allies like the lute-strumming Esquie and the masked Monoco join. The character writing and superb voice work give the journey real heart.

A Story With Heart

This is an ambitious, emotional tale about grief, mortality, and sacrifice, and it earns its biggest swings with genuine, gut-punch twists that linger long after the credits.

Art and Music

Every location is a surreal, painterly vista, and Lorien Testard’s soaring soundtrack is among the best in years — the two combine into something genuinely unforgettable.

A Few Bumps

Difficulty can spike sharply, and a couple of later chapters feel uneven, but they’re small blemishes on an exceptional whole.

Verdict

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a remarkable achievement — stylish, emotional, and mechanically fresh. Both a standout RPG and one of the most assured debuts in years.

Pros

Gorgeous Belle Époque-inspired art

Inventive real-time/turn-based combat

Emotional, memorable story

Superb soundtrack

Cons

Difficulty can spike sharply

A few uneven later chapters
