Overwatch 2 Review

A Hero Shooter Reborn

Overwatch 2 is a free-to-play team shooter split across tank, damage, and support roles, with a colourful roster from the zippy Tracer to the immovable Reinhardt. Beneath the controversy, its fundamentals remain some of the best in the genre.

Moment-to-Moment Brilliance

The gunplay is crisp, the heroes are distinct and readable, and the push-and-pull of ultimate economy, team compositions, and map control still produces thrilling, high-skill teamfights.

The 5v5 Shift

Dropping from 6v6 to 5v5 — removing a tank — fundamentally reshaped the game. Matches are faster and more individually impactful, and for many players it sharpened the action considerably, even if it put more pressure on the lone tank.

Broken Promises

The shadow over everything is the cancelled PvE Hero Mode — the very feature used to justify a sequel. Its quiet shelving understandably damaged trust in a big way.

An Aggressive Storefront

Monetisation is the other sore point. A battle pass and a pricey shop replaced the original’s generous free loot boxes, and gating heroes behind progression frustrated longtime fans.

Constant Churn

Frequent balance passes keep the meta fresh but can be exhausting, with favourite heroes regularly shuffled up and down the tier list each season.

Verdict

Overwatch 2 is a great game wrapped in a frustrating package. The core shooter genuinely shines; it’s the business decisions around it that hold it back.

Pros

Excellent, polished hero combat

Strong roster and map design

Snappy 5v5 pace

Cons

Aggressive monetisation

Cancelled PvE hurt trust

Constant balance churn
