Wuthering Waves Review

Publish date:
A slick, combat-focused free-to-play action RPG with style to spare, still finding its footing.

A Combat-First Gacha
Wuthering Waves is a free-to-play action RPG that puts fast, skill-based combat front and centre. You play the amnesiac Rover, awakening into the world of Solaris-3 in the aftermath of a catastrophe known as the Lament.
Skill-Based Combat
Combat is built on tight dodging, parries, and fluid character-swapping that chains combos between your team. Managing Resonance and Concerto energy to unleash skills and ultimates gives it a noticeably higher skill ceiling than many of its gacha rivals.
Echoes and Building
Its standout system lets you capture defeated enemies as Echoes, equipping their skills and stats to customise your characters. Building and optimising teams becomes a satisfying long-term pursuit.
World and Story
The open world is large and atmospheric, with grappling and climbing-based traversal that makes exploration feel free. The story stumbled early on but has steadily improved with later updates.
Generosity vs Grind
Kuro Games has leaned into generosity, with frequent events, updates, and rewards that make it easy to enjoy without spending — though the familiar gacha pull rates and resource grind still apply.
Growing Pains
It launched with technical rough edges and a shaky opening, but it has matured considerably and the trajectory is genuinely promising.
Verdict
Wuthering Waves is a stylish, combat-driven adventure that rewards skill. It’s still finding its footing, but its strong foundation makes it one of the most exciting gacha games around.
Pros
Fast, skill-based combat
Striking characters and style
Generous free content
Cons
Story only picks up later in the game
Poor optimisation
